Product Lifecycle
Premanufacture
Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is commonly polymerized through emulsion process from acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene. Acrylonitrile is a synthetic monomer produced from propylene and ammonia; butadiene is a petroleum hydrocarbon obtained from the C4 fraction of steam cracking styrene monomer is made by dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene-a hydrocarbon obtained in the reaction of ethylene and benzene. It can also be created by a patented process known as continuous mass polymerization.
Manufacture
The ABS plastic will then be used to mass 3D print the product. This will require virtually no human work, only electricity. Everything will be done by the computers and printers. The finished product will be the non hazardous charger wrap.
Product Delivery
Following the printing and cooling of the product, it will be put into a box and sent to UPS for shipping to retail stores and individuals throughout the globe. This will require the use of cardboard and fossil fuels for transportation.
Use
ABS is relatively harmless in that it doesn't have any known carcinogens, and there are no known adverse health effects related to exposure to ABS. It also has a strong resistance to corrosive chemicals and physical impacts so it will last for however long one may please.
End of Life
Because ABS is a thermoplastic material, our product can easily be recycled when the consumer no longer requires it's services. It can be melted using heat and mixed with other plastics to then be used for the creation of other products.
Individual Summary
This part of the project was really important because it really made us look at all aspects of our product in depth. It's essential to know what effects your product will have on people and the environment and that is accomplished when looking at a products lifecycle. We learned that our product will be really safe and has virtually no harmful impact on the environment. The only negative effect that comes with it is the use of fossil fuels for transportation. This is understandable and impossible to avoid when talking about shipping products. All in all, when developing a product, it's really important to be ethical. You have to look at what is right and wrong and apply it to your product, otherwise it is clear that you have no morals.
